Theme: “Twenty Years, One Council: What We Have Built, and Where We Go Next”
The event is open to all members and observers of the Council and will also be webcast. It will start with opening remarks from the Secretary-General (video message), followed by a moderated interactive panel conversation.
Invited Panelists: 1. Mr. Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights; 2. H.E. Mr. Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora, first President of the Human Rights Council; 3. H.E. Mr. Carlos D. Sorreta, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Geneva; 4. Ms. Farida Shaheed, Special Rapporteur on the right to education; 5. Ms. Amina Bouayach, Chairperson of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions; and 6. Miss Malak, Global Youth Ambassador, Plan international.
Council members and observers will have an opportunity to engage with the panelists. In order to accommodate as many speakers as possible, interventions will be capped at 90 seconds and strictly timed. In keeping with the informal and conversational format of the event, participants are encouraged to offer brief reflections or pose questions. Interventions should focus on what the Council has meant for delegations’ regions or national systems, and how its work can remain impactful in the years ahead. Participants are advised that it may not be possible to accommodate all speakers.

In its resolution57/31, the Human Rights Council decided to extend the mandate of Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change, under the same terms as provided for by the Council in its resolution 48/14, for a period of three years, and requested the Special Rapporteur to report annually to the Council. The Council will consider the reports of the mandate holder, Elisa Morgera, during an interactive dialogue.
